A team of a half-dozen analysts and agents joined JD in Calabasas. After intercepting the call on the “secret gift,” the operation moved into high gear. Analysis suggested that Boris and Dmitry would probably move the microchip through one of their businesses. The two often laundered money through Russian antiques. That seemed like a perfect avenue.

But there was no mention of the special present for Songie again. They didn’t make the same mistake twice. No email, phone calls, or in-house conversations about it—convincing JD even further that the gift was the microchip mule. He imagined the amateur spies received a severe reprimand for their slip. A second time might be deadly.

Covert surveillance of Boris and Dmitry’s warehouses and stores came up with plenty of illicit materials, including drugs and details of prostitution rings, but nothing close to a microchip. Agents had been equipped with electronic detection equipment, which would’ve picked up the slightest fingerprint of cyber activity within a hundred meters. Nothing. Of course, the chip’s technology was designed to go undetected, so it wasn't really that surprising.

The location of the device was still a mystery. Sometimes JD worried he could be on a wild goose chase. Perhaps Dmitry and Boris were a well-planned ruse. Were they red herrings meant to distract from the real operation taking place elsewhere?

However, the president had just placed a visit with Songie on her calendar in the White House, scheduled just after the actress’s latest movie premiere in New Orleans. A perfect opportunity to plant the chip, or was it another brilliant move to get the CIA to follow the wrong path?

Serious debate raged between Lynch and other intel chiefs on when to brief the president. If they were wrong in implicating the president’s lifelong friend in an espionage operation, it would have serious repercussions. The timing couldn’t be worse. The CIA had just assembled a proposed budget for the next fiscal year. If this operation was a bust and the president discovered Songie Connor had been under secret surveillance, JD’s ass would be grass. His department would most likely be defunded, or worse, disbanded. The stakes were high.

But if they were right … Further study of the Hollywood power couple and their staff would be critical in calculating the next move. It had to be perfect.
